Gullhanger is the hilarious, critically-acclaimed diary of a man who sets out to rekindle his passion for the glorious game, and indeed for life itself. Not via a big club such as Manchester United or Arsenal, but via the local third-tier football club to which he’d previously, shamefully, paid little attention Brighton & Hove Albion FC – aka the Seagulls.
Desperate for something to get excited about again, Mike Ward breaks all the rules of football fandom by jumping on the Albion’s bandwagon. Will he be accepted or shunned? How will his family cope?
And with one more voice to cheer them on, albeit somewhat awkwardly, are the Seagulls in for a season of glory or gloom . . ?
First published in September 2002, Gullhanger received glowing reviews on radio and in print. Top football magazine Four Four Two awarded it four stars out of five, the Daily Express called it “hilarious”, and BBC 5Live’s books panel called it “a great book . . . unique”.
To mark 10 years since Mike’s story began, Gullhanger is now issued for the first time as an e-book.

Gullhanger – Or How I Learned To Love Brighton Hove Albion eBook Mike Ward

The book had no reviews, positive or negative. That seemed very strange since this is a 10 year old book. The subject didn't look enthralling. I'd never heard of the author. I can't even tell you why I down loaded this book, much less why I started reading it. I was prepared to delete this thing after a chapter or three, but I just wanted something that wasn't fiction and thought this might fit the bill.

That being said, this author is a genius. He brought his personal feelings to life for the reader. Copious amounts of self deprecating humor, hilarious analogies and honesty set this book apart from any I've ever read. The main character in this story is the author himself. He does a good job of telling you who he is, not just what he does for a living. The interactions he has with people in his life are magnified by his side-bar style of writing that let's you know what he was thinking at the time of the conversation.

Soccer (football) fan or not, you will enjoy this book. There are no slow spots. I found myself laughing very often because of the author's way of bashing himself over the head using the English language. A superior read.

Ok
It was a fun read from a normal guy about sports fandom. Well worth it. I recommend this here book.
Granted, I probably wouldn't have downloaded this book if it weren't free, but now after reading it I wish I have spent a few dollars on it P This is not just a good look at fandom and life in the lower divisions of English football, away from the glitz and the glamour of the Premier League. It's also a funny, self-deprecating look at middle age, superbly written (albeit with some minor typographical errors) by a guy, whom you easily imagine, is just sitting next to you in a pub.
This is an authentic reflection of being a football fan. The author Mike Ward is honest in his self-potrayal geniunly laughing at himself and not understanding entirely the fantaticism consuming his life. All aspects of a mans relationship with his football club are laid open in this book. If a non football fan were to pick up this book, they would soon appreciate and understand a little more of what being supporting is all about. Great read, thanks Mike!
This book weaves a hilarious and honest narrative together with the ubiquitous thoughts of the aging individual, trying to recapture youth and love through their local football club. A must read, even if Brighton are not your club. Even more fitting with their recent promotion to the premiere league in the 16/17 season.
A very easy and enjoyable read. The author writes in a style that holds your attention, makes you laugh, and even gives you a few things to think about. The writing is very relatable. I live an ocean away, but completely understood where the author was coming from. While its nothing that will win any awards, it beats watching a mindless sitcom anyday of the week.
I don't laugh out loud very often at books, and I think we would all look strangely at a man who couldn't stop giggling to himself while reading on the subway. However, I couldn't help laughing at "Gullhanger." The book details Mike Ward's conscious attempt to become a die-hard fan of his local team, which happens to be Brighton and Hove Albion. Ward possesses an amazing ability to laugh at himself; he knows full well that there's something a little bit ridiculous in what he's doing, and he approaches the whole thing with tongue firmly planted in cheek. With a keen eye for irony and a lethal wit, Ward skewers fans, teams, obsessions, the game of soccer, and himself, and the result is hilarious. As a work of sports nonfiction or as a work of pure sociology, "Gullhanger" delivers, and it's definitely worth a read.
