'Rock 'n Roll in a Danger Zone.' - In 1971 the Sydney-based Australian rock group, 'Xanadu' toured U.S. and Australian military bases in war-ravaged Vietnam. For the first time this powerful, true story reveals the hardships, danger, laughter and love experienced by these young Aussies. 'Xanadu' spent seven long, dangerous months 'in country' and performed concerts for over 60,000 Allied troops. The group's oldest member was 21. The youngest just 16. This is their story.

I thought this may be just another story of the Vietnam war.....but I was wrong! This story is set in the Vietnam war but is about a musical group of young Australians who go to war to entertain American and Australian troops. It's way better than the movie 'The Sapphires' and unlike the movie, is not at all tainted by Hollywood. I enjoyed the film, but enjoyed this a lot more. I felt that I was there with these young entertainers and at times shared their funnier moments, as well as their scary ones. That they were even permitted to go to some of the places they did is amazing, and very brave. The story is also a love story. The relationship between the Vietnamese dancer and the drummer is touching and fresh. I have read many war stories, and this is not one. It's a story that is extremely funny at times, and also one that is touching and sad. To know that the story is non-fiction is amazing. If you can read the final chapter without shedding a tear you have no heart. This book deserves the rating I gave it. Enjoy.

Rock 'n Roll in a Danger Zone eBook JD Owen Reviews

This is A fantastic book! Makes for a Great read! You won't be disappointed. Very knowledgable and precise details. Great!
A cracking read about a young Aussie rock band entertaining the troops in Vietnam in 1971.
The music, the life, the stories, the perilous situations whilst maturing fast in a dangerous environment. You can smell the tension in the air as these young musicians were faced with the same dangers as the military, but with no training. The music and songs greeted with fondness by the troops, and providing much enjoyed escapism from the horrors of the war.
Settle down with a glass of wine and savour the atmosphere that was the Vietnam War and everyday life for the young entertainers.
OK
There are a lot of "Vietnam" stories about. This is account from a perspective that's not about war, but the adventures of a band of young, talented, enthusiastic entertainers taking a step into a world they know nothing about.
It gives a wonderful insight into the atmosphere surrounding the troops from a non-military perspective, not from those who went to defend, but from those who went to do something not many would be bold enough to try - to go and entertain in a war zone.
J.D Owen takes us there, living the experience in a first-hand account. There are fresh experiences all along the way. This book is not like any other I've read. Well worth the read.
I really enjoyed the book. I found the Australian sense of humor so refreshing, and I was able to relate completely, I found myself laughing with the Author, these were in many ways very typical young people from Australia in early 1970's, their layed-back, she'll-be-right-mate attitude, the caring and relaxed relationship between the siblings and friends made for some funny exchanges, at the same time, I felt they were very protective of one another from outsiders and respectful of one another s individual life journey.
I was amazed at the resilience and determination the young people in the group showed, kids from a small rural area who were determined to put everything they have into surviving and making a career in the music industry. This was by no means an easy five star accommodation story, although they were at times give hero status on stage, their travel and accommodation arrangements were, at most times, down right dangerous (a fitting book title).
It's also a story of cultural difference and cultural respect. The differences and cultural expectations made clear in the interaction between the drummer and his Vietnamese's girlfriends family, but also shown in a humorous way when the group entertained the ANZACS.
A great read.
